Tennis: Djokovic Disqualified in US Open for Hitting Judge with Ball

As can be seen from different angles, Novak Djokovic was depicted hitting a spare ball which injured the throat of a line judge. The 17-time Grand Slam champion, was  therefore disqualified from the US Open Sunday night.

The blunder was in frustration to having his serve broken by 20th seed Pablo Carreno Busta. Djokovic in response hit a spare ball with his racket directly into the throat of a line judge who then fell onto the floor.

After rushing to her aid, and a discussion with officials, Djokovic was disqualified from the tournament.

A statement from the USTA stated Djokovic was disqualified for “hitting a ball with negligent disregard for the consequences."

Djokovic clearly didn’t intend to hurt anyone, but the ball was hit in anger and the umpire of the match said he was left with “no other option."

Djokovic has since issued an apology on Instagram.
