March 8th- International Women's Day

International Women's Day fell on a Satuday this year. This observance on March 8th dates back more than 100 years.

International Women's Day sheds a spotlight on the plight of the woman. It can be traced back to the various civil rights and labor rights movements in the 20th century in Europe and North America.

The day was first observed by in Russia in 1913 where members of a women's movement peacefully protested World War I. By the end of World War II, countries world wide adopted March 8 in acknowledgement of women's rights, achievements, and equality.

International Women's Day is given a theme every year by the United Nations -- this year's is "I am Generation Equality: Realizing Women's Rights," which focuses on equality and human rights for all women and girls.

Tell a woman in your life how much you appreciate her!
