Former President Sani Abacha

Biography and profile of President and General Sani Abacha. President of Nigeria 1993 to 1998.

 

General Sani abacha was the de facto President of Nigeria from 1993 to 1998. He led a very controversial regime and was lambasted for widespread human rights abuse and an immense looting of the country's resources and treasury. He was a Nigerian army general and a politician.

Abacha's administration oversaw ECOMOG  military successes in West Africa that promoted Nigeria's military profile. The Nigerian Federal Government revealed that Mr Abacha watched over an increase in the country's foreign exchange reserves from $494 million in the year of 1993 to over $9.6 billion by the  middle of 1997, he's administration reduce the external debt of Nigeria from $36 billion in 1993 to $27 billion in 1997.

 

The Federal Government archives also noted that Mr Abacha had dismantled many of the controversial privatisation efforts of the  previous administration of Babangida. Present a badger also reduced the inflation rates that was at 54% inherited from the previous babangida administration to 8.5% between 1993 and 1998, All this while the country's primary export and commodity was oil and averaged $9 per barrel.  Mr Abacha’s administration was also noted with creating one of the most well thought out and imaginative blueprint for Nigeria's development through vision 2010 committee chaired by his predecessor Ernest Shonekan.
