Osaka withdraws from Wimbledon, targets Olympics

Japanese star Naomi Osaka has been removed from Wimbledon, her representative affirmed Thursday, weeks after the world number two pulled out of the French Open referring to her battle with discouragement and tension.

"Naomi will not be playing Wimbledon this year," Osaka's representative Stuart Duguid said in an email to AFP. "She is taking some close to home time with loved ones.

"She will be prepared for the Olympics and is eager to play before her home fans."

On Wednesday, Wimbledon coordinators said the 23-year-old four-time Grand Slam champion was relied upon to partake in the titles, which start on June 28.

"Now she's gone into the titles and we haven't got affirmation that she will not contend," All England Club CEO Sally Bolton said.

Osaka has been at the centre of attention since pulling out from the French Open.

She was fined $15,000 and undermined with exclusion from Roland Garros after she would not respect obligatory media responsibilities.

French Open coordinators fought that they had treated her with "care and regard" after they were blamed for being ponderous.

Osaka lost in the third round of Wimbledon in 2017 and 2018 and bowed out in the first round in 2019. Last year's competition was dropped due to Covid.

Prior Thursday, double-cross Wimbledon champion Rafael Nadal additionally reported he would skirt the current year's competition just as the Olympics all together "to drag out my vocation".
