Backlash of Xenophobic attacks in South Africa

Fearing reprisal attacks, South Africa has closed down its embassies and diplomatic missions in Lagos and Abuja. This decision comes as a result of the string of attacks and looting against Nigerians and other foreigners in Johannesburg South Africa.  Five people were killed and 189 arrested in what has been characterized as a xenophobia driven unrest targeting foreign owned businesses.

The operation of foreign owned businesses such as the Nigerian arm of MTN have also been disrupted after some of its branches were also targeted.

Citizens of other countries such as Zambia, Kenya, and Ethiopia were also targeted.

Nigeria has also pulled out of the World Economic Forum conference set to be hosted this week by South Africa; the nation also plants to withdraw its ambassador.

As a further result of the violence, Zambia has also withdrawn from a friendly match against South Africa.

Several internationally recognized Nigerian artists such as Burna Boy and Tiwa Savage have also openly condemned the violence in South Africa
