Court Sentences Ex Pension Head Maina to 8 years in Prison for Crimes

Mr Abdulrasheed Maina, former Chairman of the now defunct Pension Reform Task Team, (PRTT),  has been convicted and sentenced to eight years in jail for tax evasion by the Federal High Court sitting in Abuja.

The court, in a judgment conveyed by Justice Okon Abang, found Maina guilty on all 12 counts. These charges were levelled against him and his organization: Common Input Property and Investment Limited by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission, (EFCC).

Justice Abang held that the essential ingredients of the offences contained in the charge, were proved beyond a reasonable doubt.

The court requested Maina and his company to restore about N2.1billion that was traced to their bank accounts. This sum is to be paid to the Federal Government, after which the company will be wound up.

Furthermore, the forfeiture of Maina's two properties at Life Camp and Jabi areas of Abuja, to the government have been ordered along with the auction of his bulletproof vehicle and BMW 5 series.

Justice Abang highlighted that though the law empowered the court to sentence issue the maximum sentence of 14 years, the court was moved by Maina's plea for mercy in issuing the 8 year sentence.
