Bail Money not Refunded to R. Kelly's Bond Benefactor

The woman who paid $100,000 towards R. Kelly's bail has been notified she will not be refunded even though R. Kelly is currently behind bars over additional sexual assault charges.

Listing herself as a "friend," the bail was posted by Valencia Love in February after R. Kelly could not pay his bail. He was arrested for over ten counts of aggravated sexual assault. The fresh charges are also of sexual assault, some against under-age girls. With R. Kelly having been refused bail over these new charges, he is currenly in jail awaiting trial. For this reason, Love sought a refund of her $100,000.

In a document filed requesting her refund, she stated that she was unaware of the federal investigations that resulted in these new allegations and as R. Kelly is incarcerated, her money should be returmed.

According to legal procedure, the bail money would be refunded once the ongoing case in Chicago is concluded, though this exact date remains unclear. Alternatively, the bail money could actually be used instead to pay Kelly’s legal fees, and according to Love that is the intended use for the money once it is refunded.

In a statement to the Chicago Sun-Times, Love stated  Kelly has already paid her back the $100,000 and also that “He wasn’t able to get to his money because it was the weekend and he was the only one who had access to his account. It was basically a loan”, she said. As for her efforts to get a refund from the court, she added: “Why is it such a big deal? He’s already locked up. Why can’t the bail money be returned?”

Love's motion was denied on the grounds that there was no legal precedent, it was also stated that the papers she signed when posting the bail clearly mentioned that the money may not be returned.
